MEET THE COMPOSER

Classical Composer Jacqueline Hopkins, who hails from Brooklyn, NY, first studied music with Louvina G. Pointer, mother of classical violinist Noel Pointer, as a member of the choir at Brooklyn's I.S. 61. She continued to learn about music at Hunter College of the City University of New York as a member of the choir, under the direction of maestro Paul F. Mueller. Works she performed included the Requiem Masses of both Gabriel Fauré and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Finally, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hopkins spent about two years composing a Requiem of her own, a ten-movement work entitled "The Hopkins Requiem." The movements, written in Latin, are as follows: "Introit: Requiem," "Kyrie," "Dies Irae," "Rex Tremendae," "Offertory: Domine," "Sanctus," "Osanna In Excelsis," "Agnus Dei," "Jerusalem," and "Amen."
At the world premiere of her Requiem, on August 28, 2022, at her childhood house of worship, Fenimore Street United Methodist Church, a national landmark, she sang three of the movements, accompanied by musical director Joe Roberts. The performance was in memoriam her late parents, Harold Lloyd Hopkins, born in North Carolina, USA, and Louise Keturah Hopkins, born in Jamaica, West Indies. In August of 2025, she put together the Jacqueline Hopkins Choir.
Other original compositions include "Do You Not Know," based on 2 Corinthians 6:19-20; "The Christ Child," a Christmas carol; and "Be Strong in the Lord," based on Ephesians 6:10-17. She has written music and lyrics since the age of 10 years old. Former musical director of The Riverside Church, Christopher Creaghan, upon examining the vocal score of her Requiem, compared her to the great Phillip Glass. "The Hopkins Requiem" includes text not found in other Requiems, from Revelation 21:1-2.
For Hopkins, besides her decades-long love of choral music, the reason that she composes such music is her devout Christian upbringing and beliefs. She feels she is called to glorify God and inspire others to do likewise.

It is important to note that only 7.5% of composers are women, and that furthermore only 0.59% of composers are Black women. Hopkins was aware she was in the minority and this has helped motivate her over the years.
